BOS and CHoCH Explained — How to Read Market Structure on Synthetic Indices
Complete guide to Break of Structure (BOS) and Change of Character (CHoCH) in SMC trading. Learn to read market structure on Synthetic Indices synthetic indices.
Market Structure: The Foundation of SMC Trading
Before you can use Order Blocks, Fair Value Gaps, or any other SMC tool, you need to master reading market structure. The two most important concepts are BOS (Break of Structure) and CHoCH (Change of Character).
These two signals tell you whether the current trend is continuing or reversing — the most fundamental question in trading.
Break of Structure (BOS) — Trend Continuation
A Break of Structure occurs when price breaks through the last significant High or Low in the direction of the current trend.
In a bullish trend: a BOS is when price breaks above the last Higher High. This confirms trend continuation — you should be looking for LONG entries.
In a bearish trend: a BOS is when price breaks below the last Lower Low. This confirms the downtrend is continuing — look for SHORT entries.
Think of BOS as the market saying: "I'm still going in the same direction, and here's the proof."
Change of Character (CHoCH) — Potential Reversal
A Change of Character is the first signal that the current trend might be ending. It occurs when price breaks a structure level in the opposite direction of the current trend.
In a bullish trend: a CHoCH is when price breaks below the last Higher Low. This is the first warning that bulls might be losing control.
In a bearish trend: a CHoCH is when price breaks above the last Lower High. This suggests bears might be weakening.
Important: CHoCH doesn't confirm a reversal — it only signals the possibility. You need additional confluence (OB, FVG, liquidity sweep) before entering.

Practical Application on Boom 1000 and GainX
Boom 1000 example (bullish):
GainX 600 example:
GainX tends to trend strongly once a structure is established. A BOS on H4 with an OB entry on H1 is one of the highest probability setups on this instrument.
How to Use BOS and CHoCH Together
The most powerful setup combines both:
1. Identify a CHoCH (reversal signal) — this tells you the old trend is over
2. Wait for the first BOS in the new direction — this confirms the new trend has begun
3. Enter on the first pullback to a OB in the new trend direction
This "CHoCH + BOS + OB" setup has historically high win rates because you're entering after two layers of confirmation.
